Sony has launched two AV receivers for its high-end ES range. Both models offer 3D passthrough, Audio Return channel and DLNA network audio/video capability, as well as a built-in four-port Ethernet switch.
Both the STR-DA3600ES and STR-DA5600ES (pictured) also offer new versions of Sony’s Digital Cinema Auto-Calibration and Digital Cinema Sound processing, using measurements taken in Sony Pictures’ Cary Grant Theatre in Hollywood.
For the STR-DA5600ES this results in additional front height channels to help achieve a more cinematic experience.
With up to 100 watts per channel on tap, the STR-DA3600ES has four HDMI inputs and one output, with Audio Return Channel on the monitor output, and passthrough of HDMI content even when the receiver is off. It also has full DLNA client capability, including internet radio.
Sony’s DCAC calibration includes Automatic Phase Matching to simplify the use of mixed speaker brands, and the HD-Digital Cinema Sound processing promises a more immersive experience.
There’s 1080p video upscaling of course, and the receiver can supply video and audio to a second zone if required, and audio to a third.
The STR-DA5600ES offers 7×140 watts, and comes with six HDMI inputs and two outputs, with ARC on one of the monitor outs.
It also boasts power-off passthrough and a four-port Ethernet switch, but as well as acting as a DLNA client it can also stream analogue sources to external clients over a network. Also on board is Sony’s H.A.T.S. system, which works with suitable players, such as the company’s SCD-XA5400ES via HDMI, to reduce jitter.
Calibration is courtesy of Sony’s top-notch DCAC-EX system, and as well as Automatic Phase Matching there’s Speaker Relocation, which uses digital signal processing to virtually ‘move’ speakers into their ideal position, so compensating for less-than-perfect room layouts. As well as 1080p upscaling it can also offer 1080i upscaling for a second zone.
Both models will be available in October, though prices have not yet been announced.
