Monitor Audio’s new mid-price home cinema speaker range is the Silver RX, featuring upgraded drivers, slimmer cabinets and technology derived from its higher end Gold Signature series. There are seven new speakers in all, beginning with the RX1 (£400 a pair) standmount and rising to the RX8 floorstander (£1,000). All use Monitor Audio’s new RX drivers, which promise tweeters with higher sensitivity and wider bandwidth while the dimpled profiles of the bass/mid drivers are claimed to be more resistant to break-up under hard drive conditions.
Also derived from the Gold Signature series is a high-velocity reflex port which is shaped to have the same effect on airflow as a gun barrel on a bullet, with rifled grooves helping to accelerate the airflow and reduce turbulence for more efficient movement of air, so helping to improve the bass response.
The drivers are fixed to the cabinet by a single tensioned bolt, effectively decoupling the driver from the baffle and helping to increase the rigidity of the cabinet. The speakers come in a choice of wood veneers: Rosenut, Natural Oak, Black Oak or Walnut, with black or white gloss also available at extra cost.
