See Meridian's new factory with an exclusive interview of co-founder Bob Stuart

Enjoy a four part video clip presentation of our recent visit to Meridian. We will take you with us on our guided tour of their new factory facilities in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Then listen to Bob Stuart, co-founder of Meridian, who gives us two exlusive interviews. The first one gives us his vision of the pending HD Format War and the second will enable you to understand in simple terms the advantages of digital / DSP loudspeakers. Just click on the images below to start each clip.

Desmond Ford, Technical Sales Engineer, shows off the precision equipment combined with computer assistance used to produce the highest quality electronics and loudspeakers. See first hand their quality control procedures with amasing test probes as well as computer controlled stress testing that take the components well beyond normal usage and literally attempt to “break” them. In addition, we will give you a look inside their new EMC measurement chamber for product testing.

Desmond then shows off the long list of Meridian products since the early 80’s. He even has in the showcase the first power amplifier created by the co-founders, Bob Stuart and Alain Boothroyd, before Meridian even existed. See the key products that heve created the Meridian reputation for quality with the added advantages of the numerous hardware and software upgrades which offer the consumer long life for their products.

Bob Stuart, co-founder of Boothroyd Stuart Meridian, gives us a 10 minute “learning experience”, in easy to understand terms, to appreciate exactly what’s so good about the approach of active and digital / DSP loudspeakers, which Meridian have been producing since the early 90’s. Starting off with the comment that “passive speakers are a very primitive method of reproducing sound”, he goes into detail on the advantages for the discerning customer ; better amplifier efficiency, higher precision in the cross-over, lower distortion, pure time delay, digital end-to-end, and much more… either loud or quiet, you get “clean and natural” sound at all levels !

Bob Stuart gives us a rather profound look at the history of the different “Format Wars”. Meridian has always been deeply involved in all of these based on their objective to ensure the audio would be “perfect”. Product specifications often include an overkill in features in the formats that do not always correspond to what consumers really want, which is convenience. Format members each added more features, many of which will never be used, which is a big burden to manufacturers.

He underlines that Meridian works hard to get the finest sound from a CD because that is where the catalogue is the largest. HD is clearly better technically, but the general public does not own the necessary equipment to distinguish from good quality DVD processing and HD, as sometimes even the TV panel they play it on will actually “destroy” the picture, particularly when not well calibrated. Therefore, a majority of people (unlike Meridian customers…) will remain satisfied with the DVD for sometime to come, which implies content providers will struggle in a Format War situation.

“A format flies or fails on the basis of its catalogue”… a lot of food for thought!
