New Media Centers for Home Entertainment Market Convergence as well as other superb products  

The What Hi*Fi? Sound & Vision Show 2005 offered numerous opportunities to see and experience conversion that is clearly moving to the forefront of Home Entertainmant. Here are what the professionals there had to say about their products while they gave us live demonstrations.

Sean Ryan, Philips Field Traing Exec shows us the 32" LCD 32PF9830 which was the What Hi-Fi award winning TV of the year. It's "future-proof" HD ready with Pixel Plus 2 HD technology and offering Ambilight 2, the  intelligent backlighting to immerse you into the screen, which seems even larger, while reducing eye strain. On display was ShowLine Media Center launched at IFA, known as the MPC9350i, including 250 Go, Wi-Fi... and it will handle high def video clips via Internet (like this one !) to be shown on your TV. Charlotte Ayres, Responsable for Channel Sales UK, explains briefly the Elonex strategy for developing their Media Center product range building on their original core computer business activity to become among the world leaders in convergence technologies. She then gave us a demonstration of the products on display, particularly Lumina their unique "all-in-one" wireless 32" LCD TV where the computer is actually build into the back of the TV screen, as well as Artisan the stylish, upgradeable media center component that can made to order.

Amir Hayat gave us a complete demonstration of the Toshiba Qosmio G2O Media Center, a mobile laptop platform for Home Theater on the move! He explains all the technical features including a Pentium 760 at 2 Ghz and 1 Gb of memory, two 80Gb hard disks, integrated TV tuner, two USB ports... but the big difference is that it has instant on TV functionality, access in only a few seconds. It is equipped with Harman Kardon speakers and you can admire here the design and the 17" widescreen TFT which offers high brightness.

Ed Selley, Product & Technical Consultant gave us a demonstration of their new Azur 640H Music Server with 160 Go hard dive. Built on Cambridge Audio’s proprietary AudioFile technology, the Azur 640H can network music stored on any PC or Mac and its wireless capability can effortlessly create a multi-room hi-fi system. All the Cambridge Audio expertise has gone into this which explains the family resemblance. Available throughout Europe very soon as well as in USA and Australia.

Simon Lever, Managing Director of SimplySonos, UK's largest Sonos dealer, gave us a presentation of the six zone system on display at the show. Sonos is first and only digital music system that lets you play all your digital music, all over your house in up to 32 rooms and control it all easily from the palm of your hand. The system is completely wireless so installation is really simple and the use of the control unit is surprisingly straighforward. Our short demonstation was extremely convincing, take a look for yourself !

Andy Nortwood, Dr. Data at JVC "uncoded" the advantages of DynaPix used for their new screens which is powered by D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology) which first converts picture information to progressive signals regardless of the original source, from ordinary analogue to HD1080i signal. In the conversation he mentioned a new 40" LCD for early 2006... The JVC stand was also in the "convergence mode" with the new Everio G series including the GZ-MG70 camcorder. Laura, one of the young Ladies at the Salon (edit : see the special section Photo Report ...) gave us a quick, real pro demonstration of the features with the 30 GB hard disk, which explains why it's one of the HOT products at this year's show.
