For professional use only…
Multi channel domestic amplifiers are not the only ones to be evolving. Professional material is also benefiting from notable improvements over time. Take the example of the presentation by the DOLBY laboratories, for the occasion of the last ShowEast congress which took place from the 12th to the 14th of October in Orlando (Florida), of a new version of their processor, destined for professional cinema use: the CP-650.
The CP-650 brings a plethora of brand new functions, never before seen in its predecessors, such as the control of Dolby Digital Surround EX format, or the greatly simplified possibility for hardware evolution, thanks to modular construction. A "EQ Assist" function assists among other things of an easier configuration of acoustic equalisation, depending upon the listening environment... all computer controlled.
It was a dream occasion for the DOLBY team to pat themselves on the back for being the "masters" of the cinema world, with no less than 28 000 theatres equipped in Dolby Digital and a record penetration of EX technology (5172 decoders currently in place and almost 40 films mixed using this procedure).
As for the CP-650, sold in more than 1000 units in less than five months: proof if need be that Dolby has not lost its supremacy.
NB: You'll discover, in the three PDF files proposed in the left hand column, as well as a multitude of technical information on the CP-650, the new slogan, proudly acclaimed by Dolby:
"Breaking Sound Barriers"
A hook which doesn't leave one blank in the memory of the famous "Breaking The Digital Sound Barrier" put forward by SONY to promote the SDDS system. Which one savagely plagiarised the other? We don't know yet, but Dolby seem sure of themselves, when they add, "For 35 Years"... as though they had to persuade us that they came up with the original formula.
