Austrian hi-fi manufacturer AKG has announced one of the most sophisticated – priciest – earphones in the world with the K3003.

Aimed at “the affluent aficionado who wants the best in high technology to enhance their music listening”, the company says they’re the world’s smallest-ever, true three-way earphones.

They’re handmade, with every pair individually quality tested, and each comes with its own serial number. Based on a new hybrid driver technology, they include a brushed stainless-steel shell and a microphone and volume controls for the cable.

They also include a personalised tuning system, which allows you to adjust bass, midrange and treble frequencies directly into the ear, using precision-machined mechanical filters.

Each earpiece has one dynamic and two balanced armature drivers delivering a frequency response of 10Hz-30kHz. Input impedance is 8Ohms, with maximum power input of 15mW. They weigh 12g and come with three pairs of different-sized earbuds, plus a steel flight adapter for their 3.5mm jack. They come with a 1.2m cable in their own leather case.

The AKG K3003 goes on sale this month for £1,000.
