Sony has announced a new midrange projector, the VPL-HW30ES.

Joining last year’s £6000 VPL-VW90ES, the new machine’s dynamic lamp control system promises 3D images that are “three times as bright” as the VPL-VW90ES for half the price.

New, more lightweight 3D active-shutter glasses are said to provide “a more comfortable viewing experience and a reduction in the ghosting effects that can spoil 3D viewing”. The new TDG-PJ1 3D glasses are 18g lighter than the previous model, and can be charged in 30 minutes for 30 hours of continuous viewing.

Sony’s high frame rate SXRD Full HD panel is backed by MotionFlow technology for smoother motion and an overall reduction in image blur.

It can simulate 3D images from 2D material, and there’s also a new 3D transmitter, the TMR-PJ1, which synchronises with the glasses.

The Sony VPL-HW30ES will be available from July for £2,937. The transmitter and glasses are sold separately for £89) and £62 respectively.
