Canadian digital cinema brand Christie has announced that that its Solaria projectors are to be deployed through a major Spanish cinema chain.
The 370 projectors form the second phase of the introduction of digital cinema to the Spanish chain Yelmo Cines, by far the biggest implementation of digital cinemas in Spain. Around 80 per cent of the digital projectors should be installed by August 2011.
Yelmo Cines is one of Spain’s leading film theatre chains with 396 screens in 31 cinemas. Arts Alliance Media (AAM), in conjunction with local Spanish integrator Grupo Kelonik, are responsible for implementing the installation and servicing.
The first stage of the installation saw Christie provide digital projectors for 30 Yelmo Cines screens in 2009. Yelmo’s large film theatres will use different models from Christie’s Solaria series, with the CP2210, CP2230 and the CP2220. These include Series 2 DLP Cinema technology by Texas Instruments, while Christie Brilliant3D technology offers very bright 3D projection, delivering an output of 32000 ANSI lumens (CP2230).
About half of the screens are equipped with stereoscopic 3D, using the RealD XL system. Some of the larger screens will also be upgraded to 4K, which the Solaria series is able to upgrade to when required.
Antonio Abad, head of Christie in Spain and Portugal, said: “We are thrilled that Yelmo Cines has once again placed its trust in our projectors for the second stage of this digitising process. We take it as a show of confidence and respect for Christie.”
