Sony has unveiled its latest line of iPod docks, including a first move into the premium dock market.
The RDP-X80iP is a UK-only system with hi-fi ambitions that uses a port-loading design for each of its 20-watt speakers and promises hi-fi quality from its iPod/iPhone-only source. There’s no radio or CD deck, but there is a slide-out iPod dock and 3.5mm jack plug for other portable music players.

There’s a diminutive but very sharp OLED screen with playback information and its built-in rechargeable battery should deliver up to seven hours of music. At £250 it’s competitively priced against the likes of B&W’s Zeppelin.
Also revealed is the youth-oriented RDH-SK8iP (£170) which doesn’t promise hi-fi sound from its 75 watts RMS speakers, but does offer customisable designs intended to appeal to any teenager. The clear plastic front panel can be removed to insert one of the four designs supplied, or you can use it as a template to cut out your own design. Alternatively, you can create a professional looking design online at www.sony.co.uk/skins. It’s mains only though, so no battery-powered roaming.

The Sony CMT-MX550i (£200) is a mini hi-fi system that offers CD player, FM/DAB+ radio and a hidden iPod dock, all with Sony’s S-Master digital amp and separate 60-watt RMS speakers. There’s a USB input too for MP3 playback from memory stick or other audio devices.
