Philips has announced that all of its LCD TVs from this year on will feature LED backlighting.
The LED will be available in two flavours which Philips is calling plain old vanilla LED and LED Pro (though actually they refer to the difference between back and sidelighting LED technologies).
The 5000, 7000 and 8000 range of TVs will all be slimline models with LED sidelighting on top and bottom, while the range-topping 9000 series will feature backlit LEDs arranged into individually dimmable segments.
Both the 8000 and 9000 ranges will also be 3D ready, designed for glasses using active shutter technology (an upgrade pack will be available separately). The 9000 will also feature 400Hz technology and claims an impressive 0.5 ms response time.
No word yet on price, but the 7000 and 8000 should be with us in May, while we’ll probably have to wait until autumn for the 9000.
