Universal Music and Lions Gate Entertainment join Blu-ray

25 août 2005

Heard about "Saw", "Blair Witch Project", "Stargate" and "Dirty Dancing", or television shows such as "Saturday Night Live" and "Will & Grace"?

Well, that's part of the catalogue of Lions Gate Entertainment (NYSE/TSX:LGF), a company that announced its support of Blu-ray technology only one day after Universal Music Group, one of the sector's giants, issued the same support for the same Blu-ray... Other major contributors signed on to back the new optical disc format which can hold 25GB of data on a single layer include Apple, HP, Panasonic, Samsung, Twentieth Century Fox and Walt Disney Pictures and Television.

These news will probably have an impact on the future of both standards, with the hope that they may - at LONG last! - reach an agreement to... merge.

Recall that every possible customer survey has indicated that NO-ONE, worldwide, is ready to agree on another battle like those we've seen in the past between Betamax, VHS and others...

Time to think?
