Sharp announces new 65-in Aquos LCD TV

23 juin 2005

Bang! Most of us had got acquainted with the thought that small, in addition to be beautiful, meant LCD while big had become a new synonym for Plasma... But Sharp has thrown another pebble in the pond by announcing a 65-inch (165 cm...!) Aquos LCD TV. Sharp has been incredibly successful with their Aquos series which, the company claims, represent one in three sales of LCD TVs in the world, and has passed the 5 million units produced.

Now LCD TVs become big, very big... Your wallet will feel lighter, since the monster will be proposed in August in the US at the price of $15,000. Sharp also unveiled that they have developed an 82-inch (that's 2 meters!) LCD-TV, but it will be available in 2006 only, so be patient, and spare more money. All models come with a new backlighting technology to enhance color output.

Yet, would LCD TVs of such sizes be able to compete with Plasma in terms of quality (especially at wide angles)?

Even at the US retail price of $15,000, this is another demonstration of how quick prices have fallen, leading to huge strategic shifts and delocalisation of production capacities in order to stay competitive.
