Samsung’s 82» TFT-LCD screen

19 avril 2005

Until very recently LCD technology couldn’t match DLP or plasma in terms of size, i.e. LCD screens were rather small while other technologies would allow for very large panels. However, recent announcements from various manufacturers worldwide indicate that this non written rule is about to change, as emphasised by Samsung’s recent release of its huge 82 in (that’s a little over… 2 meters!) TFT-LCD screen. It is the beginning of Sony and Samsung JV, which will deliver their first production very soon.

A single 82 in panel has been constructed using large glass substrates (2.20X1.87 m) to obtain this gigantic LCD screen. The JV has developed new technology, such as its S-PVA ,or Super Patterned ITO Vertical Alignment, which allows for super wide viewing angles –this angle view problem was commonly criticised with LCD screens.
8 ms or more response time allow for good moving pictures. Contrast ratio above 1200:1 and 600 cd/m2. High colour saturation backlight delivers 92 pct, offering superb image.
