Pal version now available

With DVD player penetration surpassing even the highest expectations, the time had come for a digital video program that appropriately addresses such a broad audience.

Following the success of the original, best-selling Video Essentials calibration disc – having sold over 300,000 units - comes Digital Video Essentials, (DVE), from DVD International and Joe Kane Productions. The long-awaited DVD, available since September 3rd in NTSC, is now available in the PAL version, both at a suggested retail price of $ 24.99. These companies will also distribute a high definition D-VHS tape, in both 720p and 1080i formats, for HDTV owners.

“Today DVD technology is no longer just for videophiles” said David Goodman, President, DVD International. “Whether a consumer owns a high-end, high tech home theater system, or a 27 inch color television, hooking up a DVD player is more than just matching wires from yellow to yellow and red to red. Picture and sound quality are important for all viewers, and now there’s a new tool to meet all calibration needs”

“Our initial goal for DVE was to create a program that would help consumers with transition from standard definition TV to high definition” says Joe Kane, President, Joe Kane Productions. “Our project grew in scope as we developed points that are common to both systems. It's really about creating the right canvas for works of art that come to you in the form of audio and video entertainement. Feature, as part of our exemples of this art, is the visual work of renowned cinematographer Allen Daviau (“ET”, Empire of the Sun”, “The color Purple”)”

Digital Video Essentials provides all the necessary test signals to set up today’s televisions, including plasma and other state-of-the-art screens as well as home theater systems.

Produced in the 1080 line progressive, 24 frame hight definition format, DVE offers:

Joe Kane Productions (JKP) was founded in 1982 with the intent of assisting the video industry in improving the quality of video. Through work with the Hollywood post production community and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) it became clear that there was a need for a easy to understand description how video should be displayed. In 1988 Mr. Kane illustrated the SMPTE specification for display device setup in a laserdisc program called A Video Standard. It became the first widely distributed illustration of how video is supposed to work and was the beginning of a critical reference for television. That was followed by Video Essentials on laserdisc in 1996 and on DVD in 1997.

Mr Kane is involved in training, writing and consulting on display systems for reference video applications. He has been involved in specifications for projection screens, display device technology and video processing hardware and software. The company’s clients include television networks, post-production facilities, equipment manufacturers and video installers. JKP has been working with progressive high definition video since the mid-90s, supporting ABC in its introduction of the 720p format. The company is currently assisting in the development of format independent video editing systems.
