9 billion Euros for Video in Europe
The International Video Federation, bringing together the countries of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, have published their 2001 figures.
The Global turnover represented by pre-recorded VHS cassettes and DVD’s is 9-billion Euros (up 20% in one year), with 2.4 billion for rentals and 6.6 billion for sales.
For sales alone, VHS represents a turnover of 3.6 billion Euros compared to 3-billion for DVD. France is in the lead with regard to the adoption of DVD, with the figure already overtaking that of VHS.
In terms of hardware, there are 13.4 million DVD players in European homes and 128-million VCR’s. For 2002, the federation expects to see sales topping the 10-billion Euro mark.
