TOKYO (Reuters) - The Japanese electronic giants, Hitachi, Sony and Mitsubishi Electric will be launching into their own production of DVD players rather than buying them from sub-contractors, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper (Nikkei).

According to the economic daily, this decision is aimed at reducing costs and rekindling competition in the sector.

Mitsubishi Electric, number three in electronic production in Japan, should be mlaunching production before the end of the year according to the daily, citing sources in the sector.

The manufacturer plans to produce around 1,000 machines per month, which reportedly will be marketed for between 859,8 euros and 1,290 euros..

For their part, the number one Japanese electronic company, Hitachi will begin production of DVD players next year and they are reported to be planning on producing 4,000 machines per month.

Production by Sony should begin in March 2003 according to the report, however the daily doesn’t forecast production quantities.

No comment has been available for the moment from any of the companies with regard to this report.
