JMLab Sib and Cub

Gutsy Stuff!!

The French Hi Fi and Home Cinema speaker manufacturer is attacking the market for ultra-compact speakers, with the commercialisation of their first 5.1 kit, called Sib and Cub.

This first system, which was presented during the MIPS trade show, gives JMLab the possibility to tap the market for small Home Cinema systems, one on which such brands as Infinity, Kef and Energy have already built their business. As opposed to the competition, JMLab are differentiating themselves by making the system available under many different configurations. The user will thus have the choice of expanding the system as they wish: from a simple tri-phonic system (2 satellites and an active subwoofer) to 5.1, for Home Cinema use.
General Details…

Each satellite proposed here benefits from quality design. Each Sib is composed of a casing that’s 25 cm high, subtly blending different materials (real wood, steel, etc).
Moreover, the R&D department of JMLab have surpassed themselves yet again. With their eye for detail, they have gone as far as creating a special stand, allowing the satellite to be pivoted in various directions to obtain optimal orientation.
On the technical side, the system proposed here is a two way speaker including shielded cones – a 19 mm tweeter and a medium cone of 12.5 cm. In terms of power, the cut-off frequencies are respectively (at 75 watts), 90 dB and 75 hz-20 kHz.

The subwoofer is quite small, weighing less than 11 kilos and measuring around 30 cm on each side. Beyond the basic composition (wooden cube on mounting points), the Cub has a complex frame on which a box of 15 mm wall thickness is built, painted in black lacquer finish.

After dissection, we can see that the subwoofer includes a 75 watt amplifier to which JMLab has married a rigid membrane speaker of 21 cm diameter, mounted as a bass reflex (oriented towards the floor). On the back panel of the Cub we find:
- separate high level line inputs, phased at 0/180°, an on/off/standby button as well as output volume.

For the system to be able to breathe, the Cub has a 5 cm tubular vent. On paper, JMLab indicates that this little lovely has a cut-off frequency of 50 Hz – 15 Hz, which is honourable for this kind of subwoofer (the competition can be worried).
