The Death of 24 bits

Analogue Devices, world leader in semi-conductor manufacturing, has announced the arrival of a new generation of 32 bit processors dedicated to future integrated audio/video units. The Melody 32 which was launched recently in the company’s labs, is built around new architecture allowing for the processing of most multi-channel audio formats available on the market at the moment: Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS-ES, DTS Neo:6, SRS Circle Surround II, THX et THX Surround EX, AAC, MP3, PCM…etc.
In addition to this stage dedicated to audio signals, the Melody 32 is capable of handling all the main controls necessary for the proper functioning of the amplifier: Delay, distance, equalisation, bass levels, automatic detection of incoming signals… It’s worth noting that the Melody 32 is able to decode, depending upon its installation, up to eight channels, and to apply to each of them a resolution of 32 bits for frequency sampling from 32 to 48 kHz.
As with other processors the Melody 32 has been the subject of development based on technical specs approved by the main suppliers of audio material (Dolby, DTS, SRS Labs et THX Ltd). It’s also worth mentioning that this new processor costs much less than its predecessors, which augers for a slight drop in the price of the amps.
When it comes to availability, Analogue Devices have already begun selling product. Kenwood are precursors, because they have already begun marketing of a new range of amps including Melody 32: The VR-6070, VR-6060 and VR-6050.
