Some Juicy Facts’n’Figs

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. recently announced (for the occasion of their AGM) that the total World sales of the game console had reached, at end March 2001, almost 10 million units.

The PSX-2 has been on sale for one year in Japan, and for only six months on the US and European markets. It is nevertheless in these two markets that the lion’s share of sales have been made. To give some idea of comparison, the Playstation One had only reached 10 million unit sales in three years!

Sony, as ambitious as ever, has made the goal of doubling this figure for the 2001 financial year, which began on April 1st.

Kazuo Hirai, Chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. in the USA, has furthermore declared that the introduction of the PSX-2 has allowed Sony to considerably increase turnover in both the hardware and software departments, extra proof that the greater public has heavily bought into the product. Sony is keen to underline their current market dominance in a sector which is highly competitive.

Note however that the giants Microsoft and Nintendo hope to get a good foothold on the market, betting on the upcoming release of their respective game consoles, the X-Box and the Game Cube. These machines appear, on paper in any case, to have better performance levels, also being markedly cheaper than the PSX-2, of which Sony counts on selling a total of 50 million units in less than 5 years.
