Toshiba displayed prototype 65in, 56in and 20in glasses-free 3D TVs at CES.
While not ready for release yet, the prototypes allow viewers to see a 3D image without passive or active shutter lenses. Viewing angles are limited, but these models do at least allow for some head movement with a minimum of ripple effects.
Toshiba’s technology uses a parallax barrier over a super high-res (4096×2160 pixels) screen to offer the image at two slightly different angles, so creating the impression of 3D.
The system lacks some of the depth of standard, glasses-wearing 3D, but it’s a clear sign that glasses-free 3D is on the way, and Toshiba promises that commercially available versions of the prototypes will be on sale in Europe sometime in 2011.
