Active 3D glasses aren’t particularly cheap at the best of times, but LG’s collaboration with Paris-based designer Alain Mikli are likely to be considerably more expensive than most.

The new ergonomically designed glasses will be showcased at CES 2011 in Las Vegas next month and are due to go on sale around the world shortly afterwards.

While Korean rival Samsung is already offering prescription 3D glasses back home in Korea, LG has announced a new range of premium 3D specs, due on sale worldwide next year.

The new design by Parisian eyewear manufacturer Alain Mikli is claimed to offer greatly improved design, fit and comfort. Instead of standard plastic, the new glasses are made from metal, with optimised balance 65:35 front to back, plus a new nose-pad designed to give a better fit, and longer, spring-hinged arms to hold them more securely in place.

Havis Kwon, President of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company, said: “Numerous studies have shown that of all the challenges facing 3D technology acceptance, the glasses always rank near the top. “The fact is, 3D viewing glasses don’t have to be ugly and uncomfortable. We’ve just proven that with Monsieur Mikli’s help in creating what are probably the best, most stylish 3D glasses in the world.”

The LG/Mikli glasses will first appear with LG’s range of premium 3D TVs due early next year.
