Sky 3D channel launch

4 août 2010

Sky has revealed more details about its 3D TV service which is due to launch on 1 October.

The UK’s first 3D TV service will be available to all Sky+HD customers with a 3D-ready TV (there’ll be no need for an additional set-top box, though you will need 3D glasses), and will offer both blockbuster movies and live sport in 3D.

Sky says that the service will be fully compatible with all 3D TVs on the way from Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic, and that it will work with both ‘active’ and ‘passive’ standards.

The all-star launch weekend will include this year’s Ryder Cup, with three days of live coverage from Celtic Manor, and animated 3D films Bolt and Monsters vs Aliens.

The autumn season will then feature further 3D films including Alice In Wonderland, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince, Ice Age – Dawn Of The Dinosaurs, Coraline, Fly Me To The Moon and My Bloody Valentine.

Sky has made agreements with Disney, Fox, Universal, Warner Brothers, Paramount and DreamWorks (though no Sony yet) to show the best of Hollywood’s 3D output.

Live 3D sport is also expected to feature heavily, including Premier League football.

Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s chief executive, said: “As with high definition, 3D is set to transform the way TV is enjoyed in homes nationwide.”

Subscribers to Sky’s top channel and HD package will receive the 3D service at no extra charge.
