SKY 3D by April

14 février 2010

Satellite broadcaster Sky has announced that it will launch Europe’s first 3D channel in April.

While no further plans are available as to the content of that channel, the broadcaster has revealed that its Sky 3D TV service will be compatible with a wide range of 3D Ready TVs being launched in the UK and Ireland this year.

LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony have all announced their intention to introduce 3D Ready TVs this year, and Sky’s 3D service will be compatible with all of their respective 3D TV products.

Sky’s existing Sky+HD boxes, which are in 1.6 million UK and Irish homes, are already equipped to receive 3D TV, so customers will only need to upgrade their TV set.

Last month, Sky showed the first live public broadcast in 3D, using its existing Sky+HD platform.
Nine cities across the UK and Ireland showed the Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester United in 3D. LG installed 47in 3D sets in the selected pubs.

Sky has since stated it is on track for the commercial launch of its dedicated 3D channel in the spring.
In another development, Sky has announced that the Sky+HD box is now the standard set-top box option for new customers signing up to the satellite firm.

A Sky spokesman said that new customers to Sky, who sign-up to pay an extra £10 a month for the HD channels, will get the Sky+HD box for free. Customers opting not to upgrade to the HD service, will have to pay £49 for the Sky+HD box.
