The UK radio industry is considering a move to emulate the Government’s recent car scrappage discount scheme to help listeners to go digital in time for the 2015 switchover.
Under the proposed scheme, buyers of new DAB radios could be offered a 20 per cent discount if they trade in their old analogue model. Despite a nationwide publicity campaign, and the ongoing switchover to digital TV, due to end in 2012, there are believed to still be around 100 million analogue radios still receiving in the UK.
Digital Radio UK, the body responsible for digital switchover, has reportedly had talks with major retailers, including Currys, as well as digital radio manufacturers, to discuss the scheme. A spokesperson said: “It is something we are looking at, something we’d like to do.”
