LG sees 3D as the future of TV and has put its money where its mouth is by committing to major 3D TV production in the coming year.
At a press conference in Seoul, South Korea, LG announced plans to launch a full line-up of 3D TVs in the second half of next year, with the intention of selling 400,000 units by the end of 2010.
And from there, the company plans to shift 3.4m 3D TVs by the end of 2011. It sounds like a lot, but to put the numbers in perspective, LG expects to sell a total of 25m LCD TVs next year.
LG’s 3D TVs will use the same shutter-glasses technology utilised by Panasonic and Sony, and the company has already inked a deal with Korea’s Sky Life satellite TV service to broadcast trial 3D broadcasts in early 2010.
The Japanese giants have also made a strong commitment to 3D TV, with Sony in particular claiming that it expects up to 50 per cent of its TVs to be 3D-capable by 2013.
