For post-production and screening of 3-D film and digital footage, CinePostproduction has significantly expanded its DI Grading Suites and BARCO digital cinema projectors, as well as its mastering and server systems for DCPs. Active shutter lenses from XpanD are used during grading and screening with BARCO 2K digital projectors. The system employed, which is widespread in Germany, involves projecting the image to the left and right eye in an alternating fashion, while synchronisation with the digital projector is performed via an infrared process. The benefit: a special silver screen is not necessary, so that even grading and screening can be performed in 2D.
“There are, indeed, only a few stereoscopic productions out there right now, however we support the entire stereoscopic workflow, from online editing, colour grading and title design all the way to DCP. The experience we’ve gained has proven highly useful in practice, for example in our stereoscopic processing of the trailer for Ice Age 3”, explains Matthias Saulich of Technical Sales at CinePostproduction Geyer, Berlin. Together with Jan Fröhlich, CinePostproduction’s Technical Director, he oversees the development of post-production flows for RAW cameras. Preparations are currently underway for a trial-run, stereoscopic shooting with CinePostproduction’s RED ONE cameras. The goal is to provide all the services associated with processing and evaluating film/digital data in a single calibrated workflow, from filming all the way to finishing. This will give cinematographers, directors and editors the secure feeling of working in a familiar digital film environment.
