Sharp is putting up a new kind of fight on the LCD monitor market and it’s not just a question of inches…Now we’re talking mighty figures with a contrast rate of 1,000,000 : 1!
Sharp was showing off the Mega-Contrast Premium LCD boasting the highest contrast rate to date. It measures the difference between the lightest and darkest color displayed. As this value increases, the black color will be displayed as black, not some shades of gray, which means the image quality will not be affected when the monitor is exposed to strong lighting. What we don’t is whether or not the rate is dynamic (ie: artificially boosted by technical craft) but what’s sure is it remains 100 times higher than the (dynamic) contrast rate of a new generation LCD monitor (typically 10,000:1 or 1,200:1 real terms).
