Yet another first from Samsung (it claims) is its LED light-sourced DLP rear projection HDTV. The brand new HL-S5679W is a 56-inch True High-Def TV, equipped with the Cinema Smooth Optical Engine that provides super-high (1920X1080) pixel density and progressive scanning for outstanding video-image quality.
No bulb under the chassis, high-powered LED (Light Emitting Diodes) light sources replace it, so no colour wheel either, lasers LEDs are in charge for the red, green and blue. The company claims a 5000:1 contrast ratio, while Samsung's enhanced Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIE) takes the signal from any kind of input and turns it "into a stunning picture". The set is Digital Cable Ready (DCR) with a built-in CableCARD eliminating the need for a set-top box for digital cable program viewing. HDMI, of course...
Also, there's a family of smaller babies, dubbed HLR5687W for 56-inches, and 1080p native, and its smaller bro HLR5087W with only 720p. Both ship as early as February in the US, at a nice price: approximately $3700 ($2088) for the HLR5087W, and $5000 (£2800) for the HLR5679W.

Always the "Sharp" competition in the LCD TV business, as demonstrated again by Samsung's obsession for records. This time it's the 82-inches (yes!) LCD. Sharp was expected to come with a record-breaking LCD, and now look... Sharp still holds a nice position in the market, but they have probably touched the "critical mass of enemies" benchmark. Let's see what happens in 2006 in this segment. Samsung says, 82-inches is no nonsense -Point blank. It is a 1080p LCD TV, and litterally priceless, for the time being. The little wonder is dubbed LN-S8281D, it was born under the best auspices, with its built-in ATSC tuner, 2 HDMI connections, CableCard slot, and DACS speakers.
