News from Korea #2 : LG's ubiquitous "Time Machine" satellite handset

9 décembre 2005

Right on time for the launch of “ubiquitous Korea” service –the Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB), LG Electronics (LG), unveils the world’s first “Time Machine” Satellite DMB handset, more precisely dubbed LG-SB130/KB1300. The LG-SB130/KB1300 was first introduced at the Korea Electronics Show 2005 in November. We don't know if the Time Machine handset is a result of the collaboration between LG and SavaJe, but it is quite probable. SavaJe is a Massachussets based Co that develops SavaJe OS, an open operating system for handsets, based on Sun Microsystems' Java technology. Through this technology, all handset applications, including the handset UI itself, are written in Java. SavaJe and LG have already demonstrated their first "all-Java" device in November.

This Time Machine is a must: Users can watch TV, and thanks to the new “ubiquitous Korea” infrastructure, they can watch it anywhere, anytime, from the top of a mountain to underground stations. Should your boss have the rude idea to disturb you while you're watching TV, well, no problemo… the Time Machine in the phone saves the program for replay.

Nice, isn't it?

This function is active up to 60 minutes, while customers can watch a maximum 3 hours program, thanks to a low-consumption TV receiving chip from LG. Customers can also use it for messaging or calling, as well as use it to capture screen images of TV programs. It is equipped with a 2 mega-pixel auto-focus camera, and is MP3 capable, with more than 300MB capacity.

LG’s wonder provides optimum picture quality, thanks to its Mobile-XD engine and a 2.2 inch QVGA (256x320) LCD screen. You can watch TV with one hand…!
