Thomson unveils mobile set top box due 2006

20 septembre 2005

Thomson (Euronext 18453) (NYSE: TMS) has shown its mobile DTI0601 digital set top box at the IFA Berlin 2005.

This compact (17cmX9cm and just 425 grams) toy's main characteristic is that it  can be used both at home, as a standard set-top box, and while on the move... in your car or on a train. Says the company: "it is the world's first mobile set-top with integrated antennas [...] designed to receive digital terrestrial broadcast channels in multiple environments."

"Leveraged from our number one position in digital set-top boxes worldwide, the development of this new mobile set-top box technology validates Thomson's strategy to provide our network operator partners and consumers with innovative products," said Koen van Driel, Senior Vice President, Satellite and Terrestrial Worldwide, of Thomson's Access Platforms & Gateways Business Unit. "An excellent example of our commitment to pioneering research and development, it further enhances Thomson's value proposition to its media and entertainment client base," he added.

Cute isn't it?

The DTI0601 can receive hundreds of digital broadcast channels on a 11cm LCD wide-screen as well as digital free-to-air radio reception.

Its antenna system is "unique"; it consists of 2 mini antennas, to each of which a separate tuner is connected, combined with a special chipset, so as to provide "more reliable and truly mobile terrestrial broadcast reception." The mobile device continuously combines the signals -each antenna amplifies the other- aiming to produce uninterrupted picture and sound.

At home, the DTI0601 set-top box connects to a television through composite video or SCART or to a computer for software downloads (a USB 2.0 cable is included). It also comes with remote control and headphones.

It operates on a rechargeable battery that provides up to 2,5 hours play time and a 12-volt car adapter is available as an extra option, as well as an external antenna option.

The DTI0601 will be available in the UK, Australia, France, Germany and Italy in early 2006, at an approximate price of £299.
