First Living Room DVD Player
Following on from the announcement of the development of a new DivX decompression chipset, the EM8500 by SigmaDesigns (see article of 14th Aug.), the company KiSS Technology, specialised in the manufacture of DVD Players, to launch the very first player of the generation to be equipped with a DivX decompression stage. A reminder that this was the company that brought out the first DVD players compatible with MP3 and SVCD in 1999.
The company has now signed an agreement with SigmaDesigns who, in the next few months, will be the first to market a DivX compatible DVD player. On the technical side, we already know that the internal structure will be built around the EM8500 chipset, made by Sigma. The audio section should be compatible with the known audio formats (Dolby Digital, DTS, MP3, etc)…
As has been cited by planète numérique, it’s a fair bet that other manufacturers such as Tokai will follow the movement, proposing players of the same ilk to a clientele avid for films compressed in DivX..
It should be noted that confirmed users of DivX 3.11 Codecs will be forced to abandon them in favour of DivX 5 or RPM4 by SigmaDesigns.
The latest we’ve heard is that the player, still lacking a name, will be available by the end of the year for the rather competitive price of around 300 Euros.
To be continued…
