French Report Augers Well For Home Cinema Industry

With almost 6.5 billion Euros turnover in 2000, the French consumer electronic market had a prosperous year, underpinned by growth in all segments, from television right up to the Walkman.

According to a survey published by GFK, this bright spell has been marked by a reduction in sales volumes in the first quarter of this year, “victim, in effect, of the economic slowdown and the reduction in household morale". Overall, the markets the hardest hit were TV, VCR’s, Hi-fi and Mobile Sound equipment. In and case, this trend should be revitalised by the good results of the Home Cinema sector that are a shot in the arm when it comes to overall sales of upper market audio/video equipment (market of more than 1.5 billion Euros).

When it comes to the Hi-fi sector, there’s been a slight increase in the sector of mini-Hi-Fi systems equipped with DVD players. These appear to be the champions in growth terms for the consumer electronic market in 2001. Moreover, the number of DVD players sold in France should reach 1.6 million, or around two times the 2000 figure, to reach a total of 12% of all French households.
