US-based film rental firm Netflix has announced plans for a European launch beginning with the UK and Spain in the first quarter of 2012.
Entertainment trade magazine Variety reported that Netflix executives have been discussing plans to launch the service here with European film distributors.
Like the UK’s own Lovefilm, Netflix posts rental DVDs and Blu-ray discs to subscribers, and streams movies over the internet to smart TVs, as well as tablets like the iPad and games consoles.
In the US, Netflix has 23 million members, considerably more than the Amazon-owned LoveFilm with 1.6 million users across Europe.
