The BBC has confirmed that this year’s Wimbledon finals will be broadcast in 3D on the BBC HD channel.
The coverage will be available to anyone who has access to a 3D TV set and high-definition channels for free (bar the cost of the TV licence), no matter which digital TV platform they use.
There won’t be live 3D coverage of the entire tournament, just the the ladies’ and men’s finals on Saturday, 2 July and Sunday, 3 July 3rd, which will mark the 125th anniversary of the Wimbledon Championships.
The BBC’s 3D coverage will be provided in partnership with AELTC, Sony Professional and Can Communicate.
The 3D broadcast will also be shown in a limited number of cinemas across the UK, with the BBC offering a small number of 3D screenings which will be free to the public from the BBC website. Tickets will be allocated by a random draw.
Danielle Nagler, head of BBC HD and 3D said: “I’m delighted that in this anniversary year we’re bringing UK audiences a new way of getting close to the action on Centre Court. I’m sure that 3D will only add to the drama as the world’s greatest players compete for the championship.”
BBC HD can be found on Freeview channel 54, Freesat channel 109, Sky channel 169 and Virgin Media channel 187.
The Wimbledon finals will also be shown in standard definition on BBC One and high definition on BBC One HD.
