The box will be offered free to new multi-room customers, though costs for the original set-up and extra subscription will apply as normal. The move marks a more aggressive targeting of the multi-room market – previously customers were required to pay £199 for an extra multi-room box.
The new device doesn’t have Sky+ recording capability, since it doesn’t have a hard drive, but it offers full Sky programming including HD, and uses the standard Sky EPG.
Sky’s Product Management & Marketing Director Hilary Perchard said: “As the appetite for HD viewing grows we want to make this service available to customers throughout the house so they are always able to watch great content in high definition.”
Installing Sky HD in a second room costs at least £10.25 a month for multi-room, plus another £10.25 for an additional HD subscription. That’s on top of set-up costs of £30 for new customers or £60 for existing subscribers.
