Warner Bros has begun offering movie downloads directly via Facebook in the US.

Warner Bros movie downloads on Facebook

The media giant’s trial service includes a small selected range of films to buy or rent through Warner Bros. Entertainment’s Facebook movie Pages. The idea is that you can use Facebook Credits to pay for films while never have to leaving the social networking site.

The beginning of the trial means that millions of fans who ‘Liked’ The Dark Knight can now rent it through its official Facebook Page at http://www.facebook.com/darkknight. They click on the ‘rent’ icon to apply their Facebook Credits, and within seconds they’ll be able to watch the film. Rental costs 30 Facebook Credits or $3. Further titles are planned over the next few months in the US, with a UK launch yet to be announced.

US viewers can watch the film through their Facebook account for up to 48 hours and can choose to watch it in full screen, pause the film, and resume playing it when they log back into Facebook. They’ll also be able to do all the usual Facebook stuff like post comments on the film, interact with friends and update their status.

Thomas Gewecke, President of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, said: “Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people. Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”
