Philips’ one-of-a-kind 21:9 widescreen TV has had a 3D upgrade.

Philips Platinum Edition 58PFL9955 Philips 58PFL9955 Platinum Edition

The new Platinum Edition 58PFL9955 will come with a built-in 3D transmitter, though you’ll need to pay extra for the accompanying 3D glasses, which come as part of the optional PTA03 pack.

The screen has also had a boost to 58in screen and comes with Bright Pro full LED direct backlighting. With 2,000 dimmable LEDs, Philips claims Bright Pro offers the most sophisticated LED backlighting available, allowing “the darkest black and the brightest white to be displayed in the same image”. This is said to counteract the dimming effect of 3D glasses.

Still present from the previous model are 400Hz Clear LCD, Perfect Pixel HD processing, Ambilight Spectra 3, built-in Wi-Fi and an Ethernet connection for accessing the web via Philips Net TV.

The Ambilight sympathetic lighting system has been specially tweaked to ensure it doesn’t flicker when watching though the active 3D glasses.

The 400Hz Clear LCD system includes a scanning backlight to improve motion handling and reduce crosstalk when viewing 3D material. The HD Natural Motion system promises blur and judder-free rendering of low frame rate content such as Blu-ray movies too.

The Philips Platinum goes on sale in January for £3,999.
