Panasonic is saying that its first shipment of 3D TVs for the US has already sold out after just a week of going on sale.
The catch is that Panasonic isn’t saying exactly how many TVs it placed in branches of Best Buy across the US. The 50in plasma sets first went on sale with a single pair of active 3D glasses for $2,890 (£1,900) on 10 March, making the Japanese company the first to market – despite the fact that there’s virtually no 3D content that’s compatible with it yet.
Samsung was quick to follow with its first 3D offering a week later while Sony and LG are both due on the extra-dimensional bandwagon in the next couple of months.
No 3D TVs are yet available in the UK, though models are expected from all these manufacturers in time for the World Cup in the summer. Sky has announced that its 3D TV channel will launch on 3 April.
