Sky has announced that it will launch its 3D TV channel on 3 April with the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester United and Chelsea.

The network claims that the match will be viewable in more than 1,000 pubs and clubs around the country with more due to be added through the year – not to mention the arrival of 3D TVs for the home from (to begin with) Panasonic, Sony, LG and Samsung.

At least five further matches are expected to follow before the end of the season as are the Coca-Cola Football League play-off finals at Wembley at the end of May. The channel has already staged some trial broadcasts in pubs around the UK using LG TVs and passive lens 3D glasses.

The 3D channel won’t just be about football however, and Sky says it will also offer a range of films, documentaries, arts programming and other sports.
