Yamaha has invented the “Digital Sound Projector”. Even if other producers meanwhile also promise you surround sound from one box: there is only one original. Physically the latest YSP-3000 and YSP-4000 models are based on the YSP-1 that dates back to the year 2005. The equip-ment, however, is the latest state-of-the-art standard – and the visionary technology points the way far into the future.
Two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output take care of this. The sound projectors can easily be linked up with the lat-est flat screens via these two digital interfaces as well as with DVD or Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD players. The latter deliver videos with 24 frame changes a second (1080p-/24Hz), which makes signal processing via HDMI particu-larly demanding. The YSP-3000 and the YSP-4000 are also equipped to handle this. If older input devices that can only deliver PAL resolutions are connected to the YSP-4000, the integrated Video-Scaler converts the image into HD format. This allows you to enjoy classic TV programs with impressively clear images in 720p or 1080i.
Handling is as simple as it always was: the sound projec-tor combines the AV receiver and the surround sound speakers in one box. It is installed directly on the wall or on a shelf under the television. Thanks to its Intellibeam function the system calibrates itself automatically via the microphone that is supplied. The way it functions then depends on the selected setting: in normal operation the projector creates up to five sound beams that reflect off the walls in the room, a realistic surround experience. The new MySurround Mode also provides a similar effect without reflection – in cases where the angles in the room are not ideal or if viewers are sitting very close to the television.
This not only functions with Dolby Digital and DTS from a DVD, but also with normal television sound or music from an integrated RDS radio. To achieve this the Dolby Pro Logic II converts the stereo program into real surround sound with 5.1 channels. Even MP3 players can be con-nected via a Mini Phone Jack (3.5 mm) on the front. The Compressed Music Enhancer ensures faithful re-production of the original music even for compressed data signals (e.g. MP3/WMA). With a width of 80 centimeters the YSP-3000 is a perfect match for 32-inch to 37-inch screens. The YSP-4000 sister model harmonises ideally with larger screen sizes up to 42 inches.
